After Route 66

After finishing Route 66 in California, Sandra and I began our trek through CA up to the Oregon Coastal Highway. It was absolutely breathtaking traveling over the mountains with the Pacific Ocean below in all its splendor. We stopped as often as we could to take pictures and to just sit and watch the waves roll in. We even caught sight of a whale which was exciting. Traveling through California we saw red skies which were eerie looking. We were informed that it was the forest fires in the distance that were causing the red skies.

From there we drove into Idaho and kept on moving into Colorado and Wyoming. I wish we could have had more time in those states but Sandra had an important meeting she had to attend in MD on the 30th of August and it was now the 26th of August. Most of our time was spent sightseeing in the Southwestern part of the country along Route 66. By the 27th we were in Nebraska, where we visited my granddaughter and her husband. It was a great way to finish up the vacation. We had dinner, which Lauren informed us was prepared by Dean, and ice cream which Lauren said she fixed by dipping out of the carton. After dinner they showed us around their new apartment, and then we just sat around talking and enjoying each others company.

Route 66

What an experience traveling Route 66, or what is known as the Mother Road from Hamel, Illinois to California. We met many interesting people along the way that shared their experiences and where the trouble spots were. Most of the roads were paved and well kept, but occassionally we would come across a part of 66 that was questionable. We left Hamel and headed to MO, from there to OK which had the original brick road that ran 9 miles. It was a little bumpy along the way, but well worth it. Route 66 took us through the panhandle of Texas which was hot, hot, hot. Lots of prairie and tumbleweed. Traveled through Groom, TX where you will find the Leaning Water Tower and the 2nd tallest cross, Effingham, IL having the tallest. From there we visited the grave yard of several cadillac's. Buryed right into the ground. Seems like when visiting this site everyone brings spray paint and does their graffiti. From there we went to the Palo Duro Canyon Park. Very desolate and dry, yet very intriging. The one thing we were hoping to see was their Road Runner but I think it was too hot even for them. We had temperatures reach 110 in the desert areas with not a breath of air stirring.

In Adrian, TX we reached the midway of Route 66. Some neat shops at midway and it is where we met some others traveling the same route going West to East instead of East to West. Our last stop in Texas was a Ghost Town right on the TX, NM line. It's sad to see the towns gone to waste and knowing that someone had to leave it all behind to make way for progress.

Upon entering NM we came across a sign that warned that certain larger cars could not pass through this tunnel to continue enroute. It wasn't so much the height at 13'11", but the width. Very close quarters. Continued onward to the San Ildefonso Pueblo Village. We were able to walk around the village, but some areas were off limits, such as their sacred monuments, plus we were told in no uncertain words that we were not to approach the Indians who lived there or take pictures unless permission was given. As it was we had to pay to even take pictures of their village.

In Laguna, NM we hit the Continential Divide. Traveled into Gallup and had lunch at the famous El Rancho Hotel, where many of the past movie stars stayed. After lunch traveled onward to AZ and drove through the Painted Desert/Petrified Park. Even came across some elk grazing beside the road. Left there and took a side trip to the Grand Canyon. What a sight. It is breathtaking. You just stand there in awe.

Traveled to Williams, AZ where they were having a Route 66 car show. Everyone drove their antique car into town to display. From one end of the town to the next was lined with vintage cars. From there to Oakman where the mules run free in the streets. The town puts on reinactments of western gunfights a couple times a day. It was fun.

Driving westward into CA was hard. The Mohave Desert was so desolate. Hours upon hours driving through this dry land. We only saw one other car on Route 66 as we made our way in and out of the desert. It was very much a challenge as we made our way through the heat and the sand. My sister says, she hopes never to see another desert.
All in all we had a great time.

Traveling Route 66

I will be away from my computer for the next 3 weeks as my sister and I will be traveling from here to California via Route 66. We'll be making stops along the way, taking pictures and stopping at the unusual places like Roswell, NM. Who knows, maybe we'll see those funny lights in the sky. "Beam us up Scotty!" From there, we are going to travel up the Coastal Highway stopping in San Francisco, and then onto the State of Washington. Sandra wanted to visit with an old school friend there. If we have time we will head up into Canada. Then come home through the Dakota's. Now, some of you might be wondering how we can cover so much ground in those few weeks? Well, we traveled from MD to the North Dakota/Montana line in 2 days back in 2003. My sister doesn't believe in stopping for meals along the way.

At her rate of speed we should make the California line by tomorrow night.

Will catch up when I return. Until then, be safe everyone.

Lauren takes a much needed break before picture taking gets started. It was so hot that day with temperatures running in the upper 90's.

Lauren gets her dad to dance which is quite a feat in itself. William just loves to dance so much that he even graced the dance floor long enough to dance with Cindi.

Seems like Dean has been collecting 'pez' for years and has quite a collection of those little things.Lauren decided to use the pez for her bride and groom on top of the cake. Cute idea

Rehearsal

The 3 girls have already been through their drill and are waiting for everyone else to finish up.

Here I am with my sister getting some last minute instruction from William. I want to make sure I know what I'm to do tomorrow. I'm worse than a kid. I have to ask the same question, "where do you want me" at least two times.

The last 2 pictures are of the bridesmaids and the Groomsmen.

Rehearsal

Family arrived safe and sound for the rehearsal this evening. Catherine and Savannah, a couple of my younger grandchildren are elated to be included in the wedding. Lauren and Dean seems to be very relaxed, of course, who knows what tomorrow will bring. I expect to see the two mothers shed a few tears, but with the dad's, I'm not sure what to expect.
